Bloomsburg University, like any other college in the U.S., is composed of a unique and diverse student body. The university is home to many resource centers that support students during the academic year, one of these being an LGBTQA Resource Center.
This center was founded in 2006 and is “committed to making Bloomsburg University a safe and welcoming space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual, and allied students”.
Located in the Student Services Center (Rm. 265), the center operates four programs that promote education, understanding, and community when it comes to the LGBTQA.
The Speak Out!
The Speak Out! Program is used to create a dialogue between members of the LGBTQA community and their peers. At these sessions panelists share their own coming out stories and students can gain a better understanding of others’ personal experiences. These panels are very interactive and educational for all parties involved.
LGBTQA 101
LGBTQA 101 is an hour session that covers the history and culture of the LGBTQA. Participants can learn what it means to be a part of the LGBTQA community and how to support those who identify as such.
The LGBTQA Ally Training Program is a training session that informs students how they can be an advocate and ally for LGBTQA persons. Students, faculty, and staff are all welcome to partake. Upon completion, you will be given a resource folder and sticker, identifying you as an LGBTQA ally.
Trans 101
Lastly, Trans 101 is an hour presentation that covers gender, sex, and sexuality. Students will go in-depth about what it means to be transgender and how to support trans people.
As one can see, there are many ways to educate yourself on the LGBTQA culture while at Bloomsburg University. You do not have to identify as a member of the LGBTQA community to be involved with any of these programs.
The goal of the LGBTQA Resource Center (and their sponsored programs) is to create an educational and productive environment where LGBTQA members feel supported and represented.
